Cancer Research Institute

The Cancer Research Institute, established in 1953, is the pioneer and leader in funding the discovery and development of new treatments that harness the immune system’s power to conquer all types of cancer. These game-changing treatments, called immunotherapy, are revolutionizing cancer treatment today. Hailed as Science magazine’s 2013 Breakthrough of the Year, cancer immunotherapy offers new hope to patients whose advanced cancers are unresponsive to conventional therapies, and has the potential to improve treatment at earlier stages of disease, as well.

CRI currently funds hundreds of scientists and clinicians at academic research centers throughout the world. Institutions in and around New York City receiving CRI support include: Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Columbia University, Ludwig Cancer Research, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, NYU Langone Medical Center, The Rockefeller University, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Weill Cornell Medical College, and Yale University.

Our programs span the continuum of medical research, from early laboratory investigation and translational studies to cutting-edge clinical research. Our funded scientists have produced some of the most important discoveries in cancer immunology and immunotherapy and many are widely recognized as leaders in the field. All funding decisions are made by our Scientific Advisory Council, a distinguished body of expert advisors that currently includes 3 Nobel laureates and 27 members of the National Academy of Sciences.

CRI also supports educational programs for the public, most notably its newest initiative,, which provides cancer patients and their caregivers with up-to-date, easy-to-understand information about cancer immunotherapy and connects them to clinical trials. Also, in 2013, CRI launched the first annual Cancer Immunotherapy Month, held in June each year. This awareness and fundraising campaign is helping to inform the public about how cancer immunotherapy is revolutionizing treatment today and calls attention to the critical need for continued research funding. The New York Ride to Conquer Cancer is a cornerstone event that complements CRI’s other Cancer Immunotherapy Month activities, such as our Breakthroughs in Cancer Immunotherapy webinar series and our White Out Cancer Day.
